The education system in Canada

Canada has one of the highest-quality and most accessible education systems in the world. Every year, thousands of international students choose the country to pursue their education.

1. Secondary education

Education at Canada's state schools is compulsory for children aged 6 to 16. For international students, tuition is paid. The educational process comprises primary school (grades 1–6) and secondary school (grades 7–12). In the province of Quebec, secondary education ends in grade 11, followed by a two-year CEGEP programme. Tuition for international students ranges from CAD 10,000 to 15,000 a year at state schools and from CAD 25,000 to 40,000 at private boarding schools.

2. Higher education

Higher education is provided by colleges (applied training, 1–4 years) and universities (Bachelor's 3–4 years, Master's 1–2 years, doctoral 3–4 years). A key feature is the absence of nationwide standards: each province sets its own educational norms. Tuition for international students ranges from CAD 11,000 to 15,000 a year at colleges and from CAD 15,000 to 25,000 at universities. The most prestigious universities are considered to be the University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of British Columbia.

3. Language requirements

To study, you must prove your command of English (IELTS certificates with a score of 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL with a score of 80–100). To study in French-speaking provinces, DALF certificates are required. English for Academic Purposes language courses at universities are available to foreign nationals.

4. Employment and immigration opportunities

International students are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week during their studies. After completing their studies, graduates can obtain a work permit for up to three years, which provides the opportunity to apply for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class programme.

Summary

The main advantages for foreign nationals are: the high quality and international recognition of Canadian diplomas, a bilingual environment (English and French), affordable tuition compared with the USA and the United Kingdom, the right to work during studies, and the opportunity to obtain residency after completing studies.
