The education system in the USA

The United States of America boasts one of the most prestigious and flexible education systems in the world. Each year, American universities welcome around 560,000 international students.

1. Secondary education

Education in US state schools is free of charge and compulsory for children aged 5 to 18. The educational process includes elementary school (ages 5–10), middle school (ages 11–13) and high school (ages 14–18). Graduates take the standardised SAT or ACT tests to enter university. Students may choose Advanced Placement courses, which count towards subsequent college study.

2. Higher education

Higher education is delivered by colleges (Bachelor's programmes) and universities (Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral studies). The key feature of the American system is its flexibility: students can build their own curriculum and choose a specialisation as they progress. Tuition for international students ranges from 18,000 to 40,000 dollars per year at state universities and from 35,000 to 63,000 dollars per year at private ones. The strongest fields are recognised to be computer science, engineering, business administration and medicine.

3. Language requirements

To study, you must demonstrate English proficiency (TOEFL with a score of 80–100, IELTS with a score of 6.5–7.0, or Duolingo certificates). International applicants who do not meet the academic requirements can enrol in preparatory programmes and language courses at universities.

Summary

The main advantages for international applicants are: free education in state schools, the high quality and international recognition of American diplomas, flexible curricula, an emphasis on practical learning, and the opportunity to obtain a work visa after graduation through the OPT programme.
